Portugal

Lisbon · Cascais · Porto

Portugal has become one of the most-requested destinations from the Putney catchment over the last five years. The pattern is consistent: Lisbon for the tech and finance corridor; Cascais for the family-lifestyle move that combines beach, international school, and Lisbon commute; Porto for the cultural-creative move that the cost-of-living differential makes practical.

LISBON · TAGUS HILLSIDE

There is overlap here with our sister site UK Portugal Removals — they are the broader Portugal-only specialist, including the Algarve retirement corridor that does not feature in the Putney customer base. We frame this country page as the cosmopolitan-Portugal-from-SW-London move; for the Algarve retirement specialism the UK Portugal Removals site is the better fit, and we refer honestly.

What we cover here is the Putney → Lisbon / Cascais / Porto move: career-driven or family-stage, urban or near-urban, often with a Portuguese-resident scheme (D7, D8 tech, NHR variants) on the residency side, and the standard ToR customs paperwork on ours.

The Putney → Portugal pattern

Three moves we run, three stories that fit.

Each pattern is a real shape we have moved households along — survey-tested timing, destination-tested access.

01

Lisbon tech and finance corridor relocations

Lisbon is now a serious tech destination — substantial international tech-company offices, several London-headquartered fintechs with Lisbon engineering hubs, and the regulatory infrastructure (Portuguese visa schemes, lower personal tax on the tech-corridor schemes) that makes the move practical. Destination property is in Lapa, Príncipe Real, Estrela, Avenidas Novas, or the Parque das Nações tech corridor. We survey both ends and brief the destination crew on the access realities — central Lisbon is hilly, the streets are narrow, the buildings are typically older.

02

Cascais family-lifestyle moves

Cascais and the Estoril Coast are Putney's family-lifestyle Portugal pattern. International school (St. Julian's, St. Dominic's, Carlucci American International) is one anchor; the beach-and-coast lifestyle is another; the practical Lisbon-commute for one or both working partners is the third. The destination property is often a Cascais detached house with garden or an Estoril modern apartment. We coordinate the move into the Portuguese school calendar where it suits.

03

Porto cultural-creative moves

Porto is the smaller-pattern but consistent Putney move. The customer profile is often architecture / design / academia / arts, drawn to Porto's lower cost of living and the cultural-creative city register. Destination property in Foz do Douro, Cedofeita, Bonfim, or Vila Nova de Gaia across the river. The Porto move plan is normally simpler than Lisbon (fewer narrow-stairs central addresses; more access-friendly modern apartments).

Mid-career life stages we work with

Who moves to Portugal from Putney.

Pre-school family lifestyle

Couples in their thirties — partnered, often with a baby or pre-school-age child — making the lifestyle move before the family geography settles into a school catchment. Provence, the Italian lakes, Cascais, Mallorca-interior. Considered timing, often hand-in-hand with one partner moving to partial-remote work.

Banking, finance and tech corporate relocation

The career-driven mid-life move. Paris, Milan, Madrid, Lisbon for the role; central-city destination property typically with the corporate side handling the housing and visa; our side runs the household.

School-age family considered move

Family with primary or early-secondary children making the move before secondary commitments lock in. The school admissions calendar is the gating constraint. Cascais (international school), Milan and Madrid (international schools), Paris and Lisbon (international or bilingual schools). Considered, paced, well-planned.

Pre-retirement, still working

Late-career professional household making the move while one or both partners are still working — partially or fully remote, often with the destination property bought over years of holidaying and now becoming the primary address. Florence, Rome, the Italian lakes, the Côte d'Azur, the Portuguese coast, central Madrid.

Customs and paperwork

How the Portugal customs side works.

  • ToR relief: standard EU transfer-of-residence framework. We file the UK ToR1 and the Portuguese Autoridade Tributária declaration.
  • NIF (Número de Identificação Fiscal) is required on the Portuguese-side declaration. Easy to obtain through the Portuguese consulate in London or through your destination-side fiscal representative; required before the consignment lands.
  • For Lisbon central destination addresses access is often steep cobbled streets with limited vehicle clearance — we plan for a shuttle vehicle on the final leg where survey suggests it.
  • D7 / D8 visa documentation: the residency-side paperwork is separate from the customs side. We do not file your visa; you do (or your immigration lawyer does). The ToR1 customs side runs on the basis of the residence documentation you provide.

Portugal testimonials

From Putney households who made the move.

The school-term timing was the gating constraint. We needed everything done before St. Julian's onboarding in late August. The Putney team worked the load-out around our school calendar, depot-stored the consignment when our Portuguese closing slipped, and delivered into Cascais in time. The children's rooms were unpacked first, which sounds small but matters when you have eight-year-olds adjusting to a new country.

The Chen-Lockhart household

Tech professional, family with two school-age children

Barnes, SW13 → Cascais — Estoril Coast

Porto move with the architecture library and some paintings that needed careful handling. The Putney surveyor sat with us through the inventory and itemised the cultural-property pieces separately — flagged the UK export licence question early for two of the older paintings, which we then handled with a specialist. The household side ran smoothly through them. Considered work.

The Carrington-Holt household

Pre-retirement architect, still working part-time, partner art-historian

Frequent Portugal-specific questions

The things people ask before a Portugal move.

We are moving to Lisbon under the tech-visa scheme. Anything different on the move side?

On the customs side nothing different — ToR1 from us, Portuguese declaration with your NIF, residence-evidence pack from you. On the practical side: central Lisbon access is the operational challenge (hilly streets, narrow access, older buildings). We survey both ends and document the destination-side shuttle vehicle in the written quote where the access requires it.

Cascais international-school admissions drive the move date. Can you work to that?

Yes, and this is the most common Putney → Cascais timing pattern. The international-school admissions calendar runs ahead of the Portuguese state-school calendar; the move target is typically late July or August load-out, customs clearance through August, destination delivery in time for late-August onboarding.

You have a sister site for Portugal already. Why do you do Portugal moves at all?

UK Portugal Removals is the broader Portugal-only specialist — their catchment includes the Algarve retirement corridor and the broader UK-to-Portugal market. We run Portugal moves where the customer is a SW-London-professional family moving to Lisbon, Cascais, or Porto for career or family-stage reasons. Different customer register; both sites cover the same country corridor. We refer to UK Portugal Removals when the customer is better-shaped for their specialism.

What about NHR or the new tax incentives?

Those are tax-residency questions for an adviser specialising in UK-to-Portugal tax. We are not financial or tax advisers; we will not pretend to be. What we can say is that the customs and household-move side is independent of the tax-residency scheme — the ToR1 customs framework applies regardless of which residency scheme you are on.
